COMMON COLD: TOP 10 WAYS TO PREVENT

No matter what time of year it is, the common cold can slow you down. With these 10 simple steps you can go far in preventing it from ruining your day.

Here are the tips we discuss:

  1. Stay away from those who are sick! Bring a mask with you when in public or especially traveling on an airplane.
  2. Stay home when you are sick and let your employees do the same. Keep your kids from school and daycare.
  3. Cover your mouth and nose. When you cough or sneeze use a tissue. If you don’t have one available sneeze or cough into your elbow and teach your kids to do the same.
  4. Don’t shake hands-we all love somebody who is friendly but if you are hacking away keep your hands in your pocket. If somebody reaches out to you politely tell them your sick and you’ll gladly shake it later.
  5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Quit chewing on that pen, don’t pick your nose or suck your thumb. The Cold virus is oftentimes spread through contact as you touch your face.
  6. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill. When you are at the grocery store use the wipes they provide to clean the carts.
  7. Get plenty of sleep. Studies show that people who don’t get quality sleep or enough sleep are more likely to get sick after being exposed to a virus, such as a common cold virus. Lack of sleep can also affect how fast you recover if you do get sick. So do yourself a favor, turn off the TV and get that sleep you need.
  8. Eat a Healthy Diet. Those with diet’s higher in healthy fruits and vegetables and those with healthier weights have a decreased risk of being sick.
  9. Manage your Stress: People who are exposed to long periods of stress are more likely to develop colds upon exposure to the cold-causing germs. Get out there and exercise, Meditate, do some Yoga or whatever else works for you to decrease your stress.
  10. WASH your Hands: This alone can decrease the spread of the cold virus by at least 20%. I get asked all the time if I get sick by being around sick people all the time. The answer is no, I don’t and its because I am washing my hands at least 30 times a day. I don’t get sick at work. The only time I get sick is when I’m home for a while and the kids bring something home and I get out of my hand washing habit.
